I have so many hopes when I think about working with children and families who come from diverse backgrounds. There is so very much I want to accomplish and I want them to feel! When I try to think about the one most important hope I have it is simply that I hope everyone feels seen and important. If I can make sure my families and kids feel both seen and important then it means all the other hopes are happening as well! I have had so many ideas while taking this course that I am so excited to start putting into place in my center! I can’t wait to work on plans for partnering with an elder home, making sure we have more diverse toys and items in the rooms, even simply more diversity in pictures and words around the classroom. One of the things I have already planned is once we are open again I am going to order several dolls which come with wheelchairs, leg braces, etc. I also found dolls in all different ages which would be a great addition. We have always had all races represented, so I am excited to add in these other pieces of diversity to their room. I feel that will definitely expose the kids to differences they maybe haven’t seen before, so will lead to a lot of good discussions and open the kids to new ideas as well! I have loved taking this course and truly have learned so very much. It has actually prompted me to look up more graduate certificates on diversity and I think I will add them on after I achieve my Masters!
